The AMC Blogs has once again posted one of their mini-interviews. This time they sat down with make-up guru Greg Nicotero. Greg Nicotero and his company KNB EFX Group is responsible for the make up seen in George Romero’s zombie movies, Inglorious Bastards, X-Files, The Hills Have Eyes, and many other projects.

In the interview, Greg talks about his involvement with The Walking Dead through Frank Darabont. They have been in discussion about doing this project for the past three to four years.  Greg talks about how his past work on the Romero zombies helped shape and improve his vision of The Walking Dead zombies. However, Frank and Greg are using the comic as the true source of how the zombies should look.

One of the things that Frank and Greg want to convey is that the zombies do degrade over time.  That is one of the reasons why they have been casting extras that are both tall and thin. This allows the zombies to have a guant and starved look to them.  The earlier released picture of the deteriorating zombies is a look into how time and the conditions change the way a zombie looks.

Greg goes on to talk about the scene where Rick’s horse gets eaten by the zombie horde:

It’s almost like a Piranha attack – it really was like a feeding frenzy. We had thirty extras leaning over this prosthetic horse that we created, and they started ripping its insides and its entrails out and going crazy. They were sticking their heads in it and their hands in it. I kind of whipped them into a little bit of a frenzy before we shot, and it was funny because at one point I walked over to Frank and I’m like, “Dude, these guys are so amped up you better shoot this quick before they tear the horse apart!”
