In Image Comics’ The Walking Dead, we rarely, if ever seen flashbacks of a time before the zombie outbreak. Three times in all, if I recall. The first one is in the beginning of the first comic and plays as the backstory as to why Rick ended up in the hospital in the first place, the second one is between Lori and Shane. The third one is a dream Rick has about saving Carl from being it by a car, I also assume it was meant to be a flashback gone bad due to what else happens in the dream. In past interviews both Robert Kirkman (comic series creator and executive producer on the TV show) and Frank Darabont (director of the pilot episode and producer) have said that while they’re staying very faithful to the comic book, they’re adding in a lot of new stuff for us.
I literally have no problem with that, I think that the show almost needs new material; mostly because while I love the comic a lot, I still want something new and fresh to keep the experience good. A few things they’ve done was adding a lot of characters to the show and giving Morgan Jones and Duane Jones a pretty nice back-story, something new to the story. Thanks to Digitalspy, Darabont slightly spilled a little info regarding the pilot episode of the show. In the interview, Darabont tells us that the pilot episode ends around the time Rick makes it into Atlanta, and that there’s also going to be about an hour of a pre-zombie/outbreak world. He also talks about while they’re still going to be using the comic as a main focus point, there are still going to be many “detours” along the way. When asked how comic creator Robert Kirkman felt about adding new material into the show, Darabont said that Kirkman has been very encouraging about it and that he wanted them to use his comic as a guideline, but do their own thing with it.
I love this! I’ve stated in the past how much I love pre-event flashbacks with characters (most notably ABC’s LOST), and I really wish Kirkman would have expanded on them a small bit more in the comic. I really hope that these flashbacks are used in the show a bit.
