The guys over at The Walking Dead Fan Club recently talked to actor Steven Yeun. Here’s the part where Steven discusses The Walking Dead. Be sure to check out the rest of the interview as well.
TWDFC: Do you see anything of yourself in Glenn?
SY: I definitely see a close parallel with Glenn. He kind of is me when I was his age which is why I enjoy playing him so much. I remember being so eager to prove myself and to kind of be older than I actually looked and was. It was a constant struggle to be the more “mature” one of the group. You see that in Glenn, for sure, you see him slowly turning from a young boy to a man. He finds people to look up to and things to specifically take from them. It’s his kind of willingness to constantly do the right thing that I truly identify with.
TWDFC: What aspects of the role are you most looking forward to?
SY: I definitely am looking forward to the point when he starts asserting himself more. In the book you see him start to really take a stand once he finds a reason to live (Maggie). It’s going to be so much fun when he starts to take control. You might see some glimpses of it right now but it’ll be great to see how it all pans out later on.
TWDFC: Have you read the comics?
SY: Totally. I was a fan since about 2005. My friend got me on to them and I have been a huge fan since.
TWDFC: Who is your favorite character?
SY: My favorite character is Carl. I always enjoy seeing the development of a character and nothing is “more raw” than it is with Carl. You see him, initially, as this boy who has no idea of the world yet. He gets put through the ringer when it comes to a crash course on life and, later on, has to make some crazy decisions. He grows up fast. Real fun to watch.
TWDFC: Are you looking forward to who will play Maggie on the show? And If you had a choice, who would it be?
SY: Haha. It’ll be pretty fun to see who they pick. I don’t have any personal choices, but I hope they pick someone pretty for Glenn.
TWDFC: What’s worse? Rubbing zombie grime on yourself then walking through a swarm of zombies….or jumping rooftops with a full backpack?
SY: No question zombie grime. It. Is. Sick. The stuff that we had on us made us gag, I can only imagine what it must really smell and be like. Sick.
TWDFC: Describe your take on Glenn in four words?
SY: Kind-hearted Soul Searcher. (I’ll just assume kind-hearted is two words?)
TWDFC:What has been your favorite part about working on the show so far?
SY: The cast, the crew, the producers, AMC. I couldn’t have been any more blessed than I am right now. Not just because I get to be a part of something great but also because I was able to work with such great people. I’m constantly wanting to learn and grow so I can be sort of a “Curious Sam” (is that even a saying?). The cast were all vets who were willing to sit me down and give me some tips and encourage me
when I did a good job. It was great. Also, the crew was so professional and amazing they completely had our backs the entire time. The producers and AMC were there the whole time, suffering with us and being so supportive. It was just an amazing experience. I probably grew more as an actor in those two months than I could have in two years.
