Up until today, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users in the past had to use the Comics app by comiXology to get their fix of The Walking Dead with the exception of the first issue which came as a separate app for free. However as reported by Digital Spy, comiXology has just teamed up with Image Comics to release an app devoted only to the series by Robert Kirkman. He was quoted as saying:
“Today’s app release will provide fans of The Walking Dead, new and old alike, another way to enjoy this series. The Walking Dead app will make the series that much more accessible to the new generation that, more often than not, experiences their entertainment completely digitally. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with comiXology, on the eve of the debut of the AMC television series, to bring this series in front of a whole new generation of readers.”
The app itself is free in the App Store and allows fans to purchase every single issue of The Walking Dead to date (#1-#78) as well as almost all of the trade paperbacks (#1-#11). The first issue is once again free, every issue up until the last two (#2-#76) costs $1.99, and the last two issues cost $2.99 (#77 & #78). For the trade paperbacks, The Walking Dead Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye costs $8.99 while trade paperbacks #2-#11 cost $9.99. The app also comes with the option to find a local comic shop using location services and to buy a particular issue or trade paperback in print. Any comics purchased will also be accessible through the Comics app by comiXology and online at comics.comixology.com. Lastly, Digital Spy has reported that the app will be available in the Android Market at some point.
