thanks for podcasts. i love the walking dead
OK — here’s a starter list of reasons why the entire cast is infected — with some sort of idiot virus.
1.) Camp was totally indefensibile. These Zombies are easy to ward off — just nail a couple boards across a window. Imagine early settlers in North America. Even with their primitive tools they knew enough to build a stockade.
2.) A million vehicles scattered across the landscape. Most must have some gas in their tanks. How about taking some?
3.) When Merle takes the truck, the rescue party jogs the five miles back to camp. We know from the Asian dude that cars are there for the taking. So take one!
4) Gas short, the migration begins. So everyone takes their own car, including the 6-mile-a-gallon Winnebago. Please.
I was left a bit puzzled from the ending of the current episode, I am assuming, just like everyone else who has read the comic.
Though up this that point, I have been quite happy with the series. The changes from the book have remained good ones and I’ve had no qualms about them. I am now left a bit mystified with what’s going to happen next.
(Next Paragraph has *SPOILERS* from the book.)
This leaves a lot in the air. What is going to happen with the group’s journey that eventually leads up to the prison. How is this current events with the CDC going to work with future pivotal characters like Tyreese and Hershel’s family who are later down the line?
Now to back track a bit. This whole business with the CDC is worrying, as we all don’t simply want a Resident Evil knock off. The comic is and deserves better than that.
However the TV series is doing something that a lot of the long time readers didn’t expect, it’s keeping us guessing. Watching the first episode we pretty much knew how it was going to go down, but since then Frank Darabont and his team has been throwing us curve balls, while maintaining the backbone of the comic. This is good and I trust (more importantly hope) that this new turn of events only makes the story better. And more importantly keeps us wanting more.
Rest assured long time readers, Frank Darabont wants to bring in Michonne and the Governor and as long as he does those story arcs right, I’ll have no problem with taking a different road that might lead to the same destination.
AWESOME EPI!!! I'm still processing – I'll be back later.
Thought the episode was great however I gotta admit im a little worried
with were they're gonna take the whole cdc thing reminded me way to much
of Resident Evil.
Ok Kids,
this is it. Not only has this been the BY FAR best Episode yet, this has been the very first Episode that was like i imagined and wanted the show to be. Whoever wrote, directed and cut this needs to be in charge of every Episode.
First of all, let me start with the negative.
With no Merel luring the Zombies into the Camp i fully blame Glen. Even if you could argue against that, why would he not show guilt or get blamed by at least one of the others. (revering to that ringing car he drove into the camp) – There is still time for this to happen though.
I actually grew to like Shane even more. I love how he and Rick play of each other. But it clearly could have don without Shane pointing the Gun at Rick. The slow build is what makes this awesome. Showing Shane clearly on the insane side of the line again and again takes away from tze assomness.
To negate one of the negatives i had about Episode two.,
As you guys pointed out in an earlier podcast, Andrea knew how to handle a gun. I don´t think she is a quick learner, i think she hid her skills from Rick. At least thats how i felt this Episode, and thats a very good thing. And now that we know the zombie breakout is half a year in it makes a lot of sense for her to know gun basics. (and no sense for glen driving that…..)
Now for the love.
I don´t even know were to start. I could write a book about how right everything was in place. But no body would read it cause my spelling and grammar sucks. To bad, so i have to cut it short. I guess the best way to sum it all up is that there was a constant feel of terror, tension an fear all over the Episode. Wow.
The scenes were rick talked to Morgan were perfect. I feel concern and fear… but i also feel like rick is phoning another person in the comic. Kinda like a diary, talking things of his mind. – This related greatly to the doubts he shared with Lauri in another scene.
The Camp reacting to Jim being bit and his whole turning marathon… i was surprised by how he did not mention wanting to be with his family, but we know by reading the comic so it´s ok for him not to spell it out.
The whole Amy/Andrea deal was cut and acted borderline perfect.
Wen they set sails and took their convoy away…i think it was my fav. scene on the show so far. It transported a great feel of emptiness and uncertainty.
And than, BAM, cut to the CDC. I loved this like a mad man. Seriously. It surprised me and everything felt right.
The terror of the camp arriving at the CDC was amazing, the most tension filled moment the show had. I actually feel like it would have been brilliant if he had not opened the door and the group left. Everyone would have turned on Rick (for now) but we would have known he was right. But if the other Episodes are up to this standard i bet they will be able to make it work on the inside aswell.
I liked the little things, like Daryl being pissed for giving away the gun because he knows that every bullet counts
.
Right now i don´t know whats coming and for the first time i feel an urge to watch the next episode to see what happens (and not just watching because i love the comic). Ah well, maybe the second time, the first episode was great aswell.
Whats up with Merle? Is he the Gov? Or is he going to attack the CDC? Is the CDC what the prison was in the comic? Will they stay there for Season two? (would give the vatos more purpose since they are „around“ the area) … i don´t see a cliffhanger coming to be honest. I think (hope) we´ll not see Merle again this Season (or at least not in contact with our camp) and i don´t think Shane is anywhere near ready to be killed yet. Next week better be as good or I´ll spank them.
I really enjoyed this episode. There were elements of the comic involved and I enjoyed them very much. I really liked when Carol said she wanted to finish off Ed and she went at him with all the anger she had bottled up. Dale had some very good lines in this episode again. The Amy and Andrea scene was AMAZING! I knew she was going to shoot Amy but the way the scene played out was one of the best the show has had so far. Daryl is becoming my favorite character behind Rick. He is always a bad ass but he also shows some humanity even if it's very subtle. In this episode he wanted to finish off Jim and acted like he didn't care much about anyone but then he gave Jim that nod when they left him that clearly said he was sorry about what had happened.
Like lcarrero89, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the CDC scene was Resident Evil. I am VERY worried about where they are going to take the series with that. I just read Volume 2 and was hoping to see some of that in the comic since it was very good. I saw the sneak peek for episode 6 and I really hope they don't turn this into Resident Evil. I haven't read past Volume 2 so I don't know if they go this route in the comic but I hope they can find a way to get away from it quickly. I almost wish the scientist would've just committed suicide and really think that would have made it a very powerful scene. No matter how hard I try I can't get myself to like Lori in the comic or the show.
I don't know how they are going to end the season but judging from what we saw and the sneak preview I don't think there is any chance of ending the season like the end of Volume 1.
please, does anyone know the name of the song that plays when the gang leaves for the CDC? Shazam miss identified it 3 times…
Well, I loved every minute of it!! Sorry some of the comic fans aren't liking the CDC bit. I am really enjoying that part. Who thinks the CDC dude is going to be looking for some fresh brains? From what he said, along with his whispered plea for them to leave, makes me think that the cutting of the brain he was working on was from an infected human that was not dead prior to the sample being taken.
Rick left instructions on the red car on where they were going. Merle knows where the camp is. So I suspect that Merle will be heading to the CDC either this season or next. I'd be really surprised if we don't see him again this season though.
My guess is that the CDC is only going to be a minor diversion on their
journey. I never saw/read Resident Evil, so any similiarity is
completely lost on me. Erik, I agree with your last sentence 100%, and I think that is exactly what Darabont is doing.

I think we all had some problem with the fact that they ran back to camp and I also thought about the gas situation. I don't know why they would take so many cars with them. In the comic they all leave in the RV, which makes sense since you can sleep in there if you don't find a place to sleep but the fact that they took so many cars was idiotic. I don't think there is that many gas in the cars. Most of it was probably taken by other people and people don't realize it but most modern cars have a gas tank that makes it impossible to siphon gas out of a car without taking the gas tank off.
Great episode.
Andrea/Amy: Great acting but I wasn't as affected as I should have been because I kept thinking “Dang, that is one hot zombie.” The Dale/Andrea exchange was very touching, with Dale paying his respect to Amy.
There was a “Jump!” moment for me when Andrea was hovering over Amy and everyone's expecting her to reanimate that there was a quick jump to another scene. I think it was one of the body disposal scenes. They bled in the noise a nano-second before cutting to the scene to give the illusion Amy was reanimating.
Jim was great also. I'm pretty sure he did mention wanting to be with his family and Rick saying something like “you know they're dead” just to be sure Jim wasn't delusional.
I was surprised to see the hispanic family split from the group to head to Birmingham. Finally we learn a reason to go to Birmingham…there's been a zombie apocalypse and you're looking for family.
There were a few things that didn't add up to me:
What was the big deal about visiting the CDC since they were within spitting distance of Atlanta and Fort Benning was 100 miles away? I can't believe they're almost out of gas. There must be a thousand deserted cars on the road out of Atlanta. No one can syphon gas? They make it seem like it will take them weeks to go 100 miles. They could drive like they're going through a school zone and be there in a day.
What's with the “out of food” all of a sudden? Didn't they all have like 8 fish each the night of the attack?
I didn't like Shane blaming Rick for leaving them defenseless for going to Atlanta to look for Merle. When Rick first met the group in Atlanta there were Glenn, Merle, T-Dawg, Andrea, Jackie and the hispanic guy who's name I've forgotten in Atlanta foraging. Daryl was also away from camp hunting. Rick goes with Glenn, Daryl and T-Dawg to retrieve the weapons, the tools and Merle and suddenly HE'S leaving the group defenseless? Maybe Rick needs to teach Shane how to count.
I wasn't that thrilled about the CDC, not so much for any Resident Evil comparisons but for any number of apocalypse shows. I trust TWD will have a unique twist though.
In retrospect you have think that they were given 6 episodes to tell a story. They weren't sure if they would be renewed or not too. What can you do in that time frame? It's more or less the book up to the end of episode 5. If you follow the book at this point a certain person is killed and you make it to the farm (if I remember the book). That isn't much of an ending. They obviously felt the need to have some sort of ending or cliff hanger at the end of episode 6…some sort of natural break.
Questions:
Merle, where art thou? Not so handy or not, wouldn't you head back to camp to see your brother?
TS-19…Does the TS stand for Test Subject?
Keep in mind that Shane is talking with anger about the loss and a genneral growing antipathy to Rick. In the heat of the moment it felt ok. (also rick not having the right answer)
I think in an ongoing zombie apocalyps you´ll be out of food almost all the time. There are better reasons to move the camp.
I don´t realy get the CDC fear. It´s logical that there would be someone somewere still be working on this behind thick sealed doors. What matters is how they handle the inside next week. Will the Doc go crazy and try to use them as test subjects? Will he explain to much? (we don´t need to know the exact cause – that would be to much, but from what i have seen in the previews it looks more like “something takes over the brain” wich we kinda knew becaus spladdering it is what needs to be don)
I think it will come down to something that feeds the imagination of the viewer but explains nothing. The nerds can obsess about it and it will work. (see “Lost” for stuff having no point at all carring a show for years)
I liked how Amy awoke. No fence jumping Zombie there right away, more like being born and figuring out whats going on.
Yes, that is how I read it, anyway. Hopefully, it was a voluntary subject.
Love your analagy.
It was like an awakening.
About the name “wildfire”.It might be a reference to this book.
