The Walking Dead to Become a Video Game?

1up has reported that Telltale Games has sent them a special invite to a press release event where a new property will be announced. It is said that the new game will be “based on a just-launched property from the TV and comic book world whose popularity is changing life as some know it.”

While Telltale Games hasn’t specifically announced that it is The Walking Dead that they are talking about. However, through conjecture, one can only assume that The Walking Dead is the property that they are referencing. What other just-launched Comic turned TV property has been successful? This would not be a strange move for Telltale Games. They have released movie to game properties in the past like Jurassic Park and Back to the Future.

However, what kind of game can we expect? Based upon Telltale Games track record, all things point towards an episodic Adventure Game. So, those expecting a game like Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, or even Resident Evil will be sorely disappointed. However, is this really a bad thing? Perhaps the zombie video game genre needs something different.

Those that are familiar with the Adventure Games of the 80’s and 90’s will know that these types of games are very character and story driven. The player is forced to figure out how to get out of a situation without resorting to shooting it in the head. This type of game play would lend itself to The Walking Dead as the comic and the tv show are more about character and story development then sheer zombie action. Also, an episodic game would go hand in hand with Robert Kirkman’s vision of a zombie story that never ends.

What we may end up seeing from TellTale Games is a hybrid of an Adventure and Action Game. Where it will appease both those that want to splatter zombie heads and those that want to solve puzzles and use their intellect to get out of situations.

The big announcement from TellTale Games is scheduled to be on February 17.

   I would love an open-world/sandbox style Walking Dead game. If they just took the world map from Fallout 3 and added zombies, it would be amazing. Walking the landscape in that game just gives you the feeling of utter hopelessness.

   I highly doubt it would be a sandbox environment if it is made my TellTale Games. TellTale Games makes adventure games that follow a linear path. The latest game that will be coming out, Jurassic Park, is going to be more in line like Heavy Rain.

   Do not expect a shooter. This game is not that. Also, don’t expect it to be a full 40 to 60 hour game. More than likely it will be an episodic 10 hour game with sequels to follow.
