Culture Mob got a chance to sit down with Norman Reedus at this year’s ZomBcon. In the interview, Reedus talks about filming in Georgia, the crew and setting up the shooting scenes, the now infamous scene where Daryl and Rick gut the zombie, among other things.
Season 2, Episode 2 ends with the survivors holing up on a farm. Reedus discusses the location:
Norman Reedus: The shoot is an hour South of Atlanta and this whole season is on a farm. (Big hint as to where the story goes this season for fans of the graphic novel.) They build a barn that looks magical and the location is so pretty and there is nothing around it. The deal with the location in the story is that is has natural barriers. There’s swampland, and there’s only so many ways that a zombie can make its way in; and if you see one, you can see it coming from way far away. Hershel’s family is kind of doing fine without us, and then we come in and screw shit up – and that’s where we are, on a farm.
On the crew and setting up to shoot scenes…
NR: We have a really good crew and a large crew. Everyone on the crew is really excited to be doing this job, so the enthusiasm is there and no one is sitting around wasting everyone’s time. Everyone is on it, and excited to shoot the scene, so it helps with lighting set-ups. And that farm is just so pretty. It’s weird to have such a horrific storyline in such a beautiful environment, it kind of adds to it.
On Season 2, Episode 2 – when his character guts the walker checking the stomach contents for little Sophie.
NR: That was fun because every time you stuck your hand in to that… it was like bleeeeeeshhhh! They also had little tubes of hot air, that blew air to show gas in the intestines – that’s how sick they are. It’s a blast playing with all that stuff, the gut bag, it’s all a blast.
