The Hollywood Reporter got a chance to sit down with Norman Reedus to talk about The Walking Dead. In the interview Reedus talks about Daryl’s past which was hinted at in Episode 3. Reedus also says that Episode 6 (which is titled “Secrets”) will delve a little deeper into Daryl’s past:
“Daryl was written as angry, angry, angry, I tried to give Daryl some layers, have him tear up a little bit as he’s throwing squirrels at people and trying to cut people.”
He then goes on to talk about what Daryl is like now:
“Daryl can hunt, he can protect you, he’s not afraid of anything, which makes him an asset to the group, but having people in the group tell him he’s valuable and he’s worth more than he thinks he is is hard for him to accept, Emotionally, he’s pretty bankrupt, so having him start relationships other than just kill-you, piss-you-off is a difficult part for Daryl; he has a different agenda than everyone else. When he goes out of his way to save certain people, it’s because he’s trying to keep the family together, he’s never really had a family before and he’s finding comfort in the group. You have people in the group going, ‘You’re worth something, we trust you,’ and if you never had that before, you’re going to stick around, besides, there’s safety and comfort in numbers even if you hate the dude sitting next to you.”
He then goes on to address fans concerns that Daryl is getting too soft:
“Daryl is bonding with a lot of people you wouldn’t expect him to bond with, there’s a sensitive side to Daryl that’s very hard to get at. Something happens that opens up that side of Daryl and it’s a shock when people see that side of him.”
And finally, Reedus talks about his on-screen brother Merle which could put Daryl in a tough spot because of what happened between the Survivors and Merle back in the First Season
“The Merle thing will definitely come back up in a big way, if Merle comes back and he wants to hurt the group, Daryl will stick up for the group; if Merle comes back and the group wants to hurt Merle, Daryl will stick up for Merle.”

I get what Reedus is doing with the Daryl Dixon’s character. It’s brilliant because people are not just one note.
