NOTE: If you haven’t seen Episode 5 yet and don’t want to be spoiled DO NOT READ ON!
Entertainment Weekly again got a chance to sit down with Robert Kirkman, this time it was about Season 2 Episode 5 “Chupacabra”. In the interview Kirkman talks about the return of Merle noting that it was unfortunate that it was just an illusion, Kirkman also says that those scenes with Merle and Daryl were the first time Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus had a scene together, he also talks about the barn and the situation between the survivors and Hershel’s people, and they kind of wind things up with talking about Shane shooting Otis in the leg rather than the head.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Michael Rooker!
ROBERT KIRKMAN: Exactly, right? It’s unfortunate that it was just a vision, a hallucination of some sort. But having him back in the show was an absolute delight. Hopefully it will happen again at some point soon.I love the way you say “hopefully” as if this has nothing to do with you.
[Laughs] I’m trying to be coy! My favorite thing was that we hadn’t ever seen those characters interact. I guess we still technically haven’t. But this is the first time Rooker and Reedus have been in a scene together, which is really cool.Did you know Rooker has his own gun range?
I would not doubt it. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Rooker has his own private island where he hunts human beings. All I’m saying is that Rooker might be the most interesting man in the world. Is it fun thinking up new ways for Daryl to be a bada–?
It really is. It’s nice seeing Daryl out there on his own. We established early on that he is the survivalist of the group and also it’s interesting that this guy who does seem to be a bit of prickly pair is the one that is throwing himself gung-ho into this mission of searching for Sofia. So it is nice to see a little bit of a soft side to him. But at the same time, you’re watching him cut zombies’ ears off and making a necklace out of them, which is a little bizarre.Bizarre, yes. But also, I couldn’t help feeling, unhygienic. As my father used to say, if you’re going to make a necklace out of ears, make sure they’re fresh.
[Laughs] Did he get that advice from Michael Rooker?

Mr. Kirkman I’m really enjoying the way you’re developing Daryl’s character. A seemingly simple man but with varied layers of complex emotions. You really bring his character to life. Everyone is anticipating more interaction between Merle and Daryl. The back story of the brother’s childhood trauma’s and triumphs will certainly make an epic event for this dramatic series. Thank you for making this unique and record breaking series and please give us more Dixon brothers soon
