After Episode 6 “Secrets” aired the internet was set ablaze because of the scene where Lori takes the Morning After Pill’s to terminate her pregnancy. The main part of the controversy centers around the fact that the producers inaccurately portrayed how the drug is used. Glenn Mazzara responded to these accusations by saying that the producers are fully aware of the Morning After Pill’s correct use and that they used some creative license to explore the storyline
“The producers and writers of ‘The Walking Dead’ are fully aware that the morning-after pill would not induce an abortion or miscarriage, we exercised our artistic creative license to explore a storyline with one of our characters, not to make any pro-life or pro-choice political statement. We sincerely hope that people are not turning to the fictional world of ‘The Walking Dead’ for accurate medical information.”
But still that didn’t silence the shows critics who think that the show was presenting misleading family planning information. One of the more vocal critics of this controversy is The American Civil Liberties Union who, in their article entitled “Walking Dead Is Wrong On Emergency Contraception, Stick To Zombies”, says that the show is doing it’s fans a big disservice by portraying invalid information.
“‘The Walking Dead’ is not doing its fans or themselves any favors by promoting false information. Lori is several weeks pregnant and the morning-after pill can’t induce a miscarriage. What it can do is prevent pregnancy if taken within 5 days of unprotected sex; although the sooner it is taken the more likely it is to work.”
The American Civil Liberties union isn’t alone in their objections, Flavorwire threw out their two-cents also.
“Seriously, ‘Walking Dead’ writers: Do you just not know how emergency contraception works, or did you assume we didn’t?”
