The Left 4 Dead Series by Valve
The Left 4 Dead series debuted on PC and box 360 in 2010, followed by a sequel the following year. The game follows the action packed adventures of four survivors during the zombie apocalypse. The player controls their selected character through a first person view, creating a fast paced zombie killing experience.
The unique highlight of the Left 4 Dead games is the multiplayer versus mode. Four players take control of the human characters from the single player campaign while the other four control “special infected”, a group of super powered undead with unique attributes. Teams take turns as either type, trying to earn points via completion of a given level.
The co-op campaign and excellent versus modes make this zombie hunting extravaganza a unique and engaging game for any zombie enthusiast.
Dead Island shares some small similarities with L4D. It also uses a first person perspective as well as four player co-op. However, the similarities end there. Dead Island takes place on a tropical resort, where survivors find themselves in the midst of yet another zombie apocalypse.
Instead of focusing on fast paced action, the game relies more on melee combat, with players able to upgrade weapons like baseball bats and shovels to create more powerful zombie slaying tools. The island of Banoi is open to players, offering up a variety of missions from rescuing fellow survivors to supply runs.
Though Dead Island suffers from some glitches and bugs, it offers the first real glimpse at what an open world zombie game can be. It’s definitely worth taking a run through.
The Dead Rising Series by Capcom
The Dead Rising series takes itself much less seriously than its competition. Protagonists Frank West and Chuck Greene find themselves in shopping malls and casinos during the zombie epidemic, and are able to use any and all objects to fight back.
The game holds many insane weapons, ridiculous costumes, over the top bosses and one of the strangest storylines in video game history. In this way, Dead Rising both separates itself from other zombie games and pays tribute to some of the genre’s more hilarious offerings like Dead Alive and The Evil Dead.
This series is infinitely playable, with multiple different choices to make and missions to undertake, Dead Rising proves to be one of the most purely entertaining games in recent years.
Next week we’ll examine some other great zombie films.
